View Full Version : Alternate for Pane Tabs

Mudi,
There have been a number of requests for pane tabs. I can see where this could be useful, at times, especially when you are filling a folder in one pane with files from several different folders. I also understand that this would be a relatively major piece of work to implement.
Allow me to offer a suggestion that I believe would satisfy most of the reasons for need, such as the one I mentioned above.
Let's say that I drill down to a folder in one of my favorites. Now if I change to another favorite and then return to the first one, it is back at the root. If you could just "remember" where it was and then return to that position, it would facilitate working with multiple folders by simply clicking different favorites, without having to drill down to the last used folder each time. You could even have a config setting to remember last position or not. It could be thought of as tabs, only on the favorite's pane, instead of the window's pane.
It won't answer everyone's need, but would be useful for a lot of users and this would be a relatively quick and simple feature to implement. (I have been writing code since the 1970's, so I do understand what's involved in some of these "suggestions".
Just a suggestion ... would be interested in any thoughts on it.

Nice thought !
The main reason for many users asking for pane-tabs probably is another one though.
Users are looking to have THEIR own working environment set up (panes and tabs) and then come back to it everytime they start ForkLift.
Thats why I suggested the implementation of "Views".

Views are sets of panes. Each pane has it´s own tab.
Both Views and Pane-Tabs get saved when you quit Forklift and can additionally be saved as "Bookmarks".
This way - you can set up multiple working environments (fiel, ftp, whatever) and get back to this specific layout/task by the click of a button (or entry in the bookmarks menu).
Especially a productivity tool like ForkLift should not follow a specific approach to how people "should" use it but leave it completely up to them.
Pathfinder and other approaches to replacing the work in Finder windows with something more descent failed, cause they ask you to follow THEIR approach and do what THEY think is useful.
We all work differently ... so leave the setup of the working-environment (panes, tabs etc.) up to the user.
PS: Im aware that this is asking a lot from the developers. I just feel we - the users - should give as much feedback as possible to contribute to a roadmap, we feel happy with.
Ive seen MuCommander, Xfolders and Midnight Commander die because of the wrong roadmap ...... DiskOrder is about to fail, too - Pathfinder doesnt fit most peoples need ....... I simply dont wanna see that happening to ForkLift.

Great idea AussiePup
I've always been partial to using the favorites instead of the Tabs (which I never use myself), and something like along these lines would definitely work for me.
I will be arguing for this approach when discussing the Tabs with the other guys here at BinaryNights.

AppleTV,
Thanks for your thoughts ... I hear what you're saying. Sometimes you have to weigh added functionality against time and effort required to produce it. The reason I made my suggestion is that it could be implemented in a relative heartbeat!
My daddy was fond of saying ... "No one has a corner on all the good ideas"
How true. Hoping that someday we can all have our dreams realized!

Csaba, thanks for your vote of confidence!

I never believed in "intermediate" solutions ;)
