Hi folkz

I hope someone can help me with this as i'm out of ideas!
I am trying to connect to my newly installed RaidenFTPD server.

I know its nothing wrong on the server side since i can connect to it from another laptop (windows XP) as well as from the OSX through terminal (ftp).

So the question is why Forklift refuses to connect?

I have tested all the settings there are like passive mode on/off and
so far i have not succeeded.

It does seem to initiate the connection and some actions are happening like
CWD/
But it all end up in a "Authentication failed, check username and password!".

Appreciate some guidance as google and forum didnt help me so far.

ps. i am using internal ip 192.168.2.30 and also i have opened the port on my router so all good. As i said i can connect using the ftp command from osx.

Regards
/Reza

I have tested for like 2 hours and for some reason i tested a last try using remote directory "/Downloads" and to my supprise it connected!!!!!

As default it was set to "/"
Why cant i connect with the default path which works from other programs? it this a bug?

Also the speed it extremly slow (dont think its Forklift to be honest) just like when i transfer with smb share :(
It started with 250Kb/s and went down to around 20kb/s and goes up and down but never over 100kb/s.
What is the problem between pc and mac? when is it so slow in between? can it be the filesystem different?

Hi reza666,

About the speed issue, I don't know. we may come back to this later. but first:

This is what I can tell you about accessing the / path:
First, you don't need to enter the / in the initial path setting, since FL will get you to your user's default path without the need to enter anything.
If you enter / in the initial path, FL will try to get you to the root folder of the FTP server (which may be different from your user's home path).

This is the operation that failed in your case.

To my understanding, the operation failed because you do not have sufficient privileges to access the root folder of the FTP. Now I have checked this, and indeed we do have to correct the error message here, because the error here is obviously not with the authentication, but with access privileges.

What happens if you do not enter anything in the initial path field, and try to connect like that?

Sorry for the wait.

Below is the result when not using "/" as path:
--->Server response: 550 Permission denied.

Using Transmit i get:
----------------
Server said:
Permission denied.
Error -125: remote chdir failed
---------------
Although it does log in and show my 2 folders (Downloads and Mp3)!

Using FlashFXP on pc all goes ok:
---------------------
[L] PWD
[L] 257 "/" is current directory
[L] TYPE A
[L] 200 Type set to ASCII.
[L] PASV
[L] 227 Entering Passive Mode (192,168,2,30,5,122)
[L] Opening data connection IP: 192.168.2.30 PORT: 1402
[L] MLSD
[L] 150 Opening ASCII data connection for ls /.
[L] 226-free disk space under this directory : 66771 mb
[L] 226 Transfer finished successfully. Data connection closed .
[L] List Complete: 593 bytes in 0,16 seconds (3,7 KB/s)
---------------------

ps. also any ideas why the transfer is sooo slow, i searched so much on the net without finding anything that helps.

Some more info:

On the server these are the permissions:

Server root (/)
Owner User RWXL
Owner Group RL
other group RL

Server folders (/Downloads)
Owner User RWXL
Owner Group RwL
other group RwL

As you can see the read and list is on for the root.

if you are interested i can let you connect to it and test?

Yes, reading the above, it does seem like it would help a lot if I could test this first hand. So please, email us the login info to bugreport@binarynights.com and I'll try to have a look at this today.

Done. I will read my mail more often tomorrow as well. Thanks again.

Yes, we found it.
There are two problems with your server, we're working on a workaround for both issues.
The first is that the server does not allow a cwd command on the root directory, and returns a permission error, although the permission exists. This can be circumvented by eliminating the cwd command if FL is already in the target directory.

The second is that the server gives a faulty IP in passive mode, and FL tries to connect to this nonexistent IP. It is a standard solution to simply disregard the IP address returned by the server, and would fix the issue.
Still, I think this is a configuration issue on your side - are you behind a router by any chance?

We did not yet get to test the speed issue, but we'd like to do that sometime, if you can maintain our test account on your server.

hmmm strange, what ip do you get?

Yes i am behind a router although i have added the following on the "Virtual Server" and forward the ports to my internal ip,
1) server port 7667 (TCP)
2)data port range 1401-1410 (TCP)

also i am using no-ip.org as you got to get to me.

Sure i will keep the server up as long as needed. The box is kinda noisy so i would like to turn it off during the night swedish time (11:00 pm to 9am) if u dont mind but its up rest of the day.

ps. I'm using RaidenFTPD server which has been around for years. You can always download and play around with it. Perhaps there is some settings which i could change.

Cool, guessing there is a update when i start Forklift :)
will try later this weekend.

Did you try to transfer to a pc? The speed issue is sooooo annoying. Can't really understand why. I mean TCP/IP should work the same way.

Thanks guys.

I'm sorry no update yet. This fix will be included in the 1.6 release.

Regarding speed, as I remember when we downloaded from your site it was about 60-80KB/sec. We have a gigabit connection to the internet so there should be no limit on our side. We can download from our servers with 10MB/sec easily.

ok i see , is 1.6 soon? any cool new features? ;)

What is your servers OS? unless its windows(Vista) you will not see the problem.
As i said this is not specific for Forklift but would be good to know what is causing the slow speed.

In any case thanks for the great support Mudi.
